The Laws of Nations; or Principals of the Law of Nature Applied to the Conduct and Affairs of Nations and Sovereigns

London: Newberry, 1759. First Edition. THE LAW OF NATIONS; OR PRINCIPLES OF THE LAW OF NATURE: APPLIED TO THE CONDUCT AND AFFAIRS OF NATIONS AND SOVEREIGNS. EMERICH DE VATTEL. London: Newbery. 1760-1759. First edition in English. Quarto, two volumes bound together as issued. Title page of Vol.1 dated 1760 printed in red and black, with fine engraved vignette; title of Vol. 2 printed in black and dated 1759. Original full mottled calf, re-backed in period style with gilt compartments, red label; bookplate of Francis Earl of Killmorey engraved by Huntly on front pastedown. Some foxing and chipping of fore edges of a few leaves at front and rear. Otherwise, a very handsome copy of the rare first English edition of this important work. de Vattel's seminal and influential work became a point of reference for virtually all international law and political theory subsequent to its publication; firstly in French, then more importantly, in English. The founders of the United States, including Jefferson, Washington, and Madison, believed this was an essential work in forming national policy. It was often reprinted in the United States in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The 'Birthers' took it as the vade mecum source for their contested definition of a citizen. Very Good. Item #260
