Polish-British author Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) is known to use the symbolism and trials of the sea to test his characters, creating worlds of dread for readers, and Youth is no exception. Despite his sophisticated prose style, Conrad was not a fluent English speaker until his 20 s, having spent his early years using the Polish tongue. Much like other great writers, Conrad was plagued with debts and depression, going as far as attempting suicide in 1878 at the age of 20. Following the failed attempt, Conrad went on to serve as a British Merchant Marine, a post that would undoubtedly provide fuel for his future writing career. Many of his fellow sailors play key roles in his novels, some of which are able to be picked out by those discerning readers.
