Large folio (15.5in x 12in); brown leather binding richly decorated in the style of Grolier's 'Last Binder'; elaborate in-lay lacework and coat of arms in Belgian colours in the centre, embossed gilt vines and flowers, double gilt rule border. Spine decorated in gilt compartments between six raised bands, with gilt lettering. Full gauffered gilt edges, gilt dentelles. Condition of binding is in very good, mild chipping at head of spine. Paste-down and end papers patterned gilt paper. Stamped with possible previous owner, Dr. Rudolph Werner, München. Elaborately illustrated in black and white, including full-page frontispiece, plus 46 full-page plates, as well as extensive captioned illustrations and diagrams throughout. Main chapters feature chapter heading and end of chapter ornaments as well as large, black-and-white decorative letters at the start of chapters.
