Richard Bentley (1794-1871) was a nineteenth century publisher born into a publishing family. Bentley began pubishing the works of Austen in 1833 as a set, making it possible to have the whole works at a reasonable price. The memoir was added to 1869 editions and onward, and was meant to describe Austen's literary career and seemingly "uneventful life".
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist, best known for her feminist themes and critique of the English elite. Austen often describes the struggles of women, to secure social standing and financial security through marriage. Austen's novels were initially published anonymously, "at commission" meaning at the author's own expense.
