2 volumes. 340; 341 pp. Extra-illustrated with copper engraved portrait frontispiece in Vol. 1 and 40 engraved plates throughout, many in 2 states. 20x12 cm (7¾x4¾"), full crushed morocco, elaborately ruled in gilt, raised bands, spines tooled in gilt; all edges gilt, patterned endpapers, gilt dentelles, custom slipcase.
Handsome edition of Voltaire, including Candide, Zadig, etc. Illustrated with fine copperplate engravings apparently from a French edition. Lowndes p. 2793.
bookbinder Hippolyte Duru ("H. Duru"). Paris bookbinder, active 1843-1863; retired in 1863 and left direction of his studio to his associate [René-Victor] Chambolle, who signed his bindings Chambolle-Duru; d. 1884)
Chambolle-Duru was a bookbinding partnership between René Victor Chambolle (1834-1898) and Hippolyte Duru (1803-1884) during the Golden Age of Bookbinding in France. The firm, founded in 1861, bound books of high quality and artisan together in collaboration until Rene Chambolle took over entirely (retaining the name, Chamolle-Duru), until finally transferring the company to his son in 1898.
