This is a wonderful English translation of Richard Wagner's 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walkure', which served as the first and second of four music dramas within 'Der Ring des Nibelungen'. This operatic work opens with three Rhinemaidens who are playing together when a Nibelung dwarf named alberich appears from a deep chasm to woo them. When he is rejected by them, he steals a magic ring in anger, with the rest of the work following the attempts to retrieve the ring and its power.
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer, theatre director, and conductor. He is best known for his numerous operas, which are said to be notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies, and use of leitmotifs, or musical phrases associated with individual characters.
Translated into English by Margaret Armour (1860-1943), a Scottish poet and translator. She is particularly known for her Middle High German translations of works such as 'Nibelungenlied', 'The Ring of the Nibelung', and 'Gudrun'.
